Detroit, Michigan
America’s First Off-Wire Maintenance Hub for Modern Streetcar Transit
Turner partnered with M-1 Rail to deliver the Penske Technical Center - the nation’s first vehicle maintenance and storage facility designed to support a 100% off-wire operation. Located at the northern terminus of the 3.3-mile QLINE corridor, this 20,000 SF facility serves as both the system’s operations headquarters and its hub for maintenance, cleaning, storage, and dispatch. Purpose-built to support the unique energy demands of hybrid on- and off-wire vehicles, the facility includes three primary maintenance bays - overhead repair, pit repair with bridge crane and jacks, and a dedicated wash bay. The remainder of the building features administrative offices, training rooms, dispatch space, and concealed logistics access to preserve the historic streetscape. The QLINE circulates through Detroit’s dense Midtown and downtown corridors, stopping at 12 stations and linking cultural landmarks, business districts, and waterfront destinations. Turner’s delivery of the Penske Technical Center ensured seamless integration with the urban fabric while providing sustainable support infrastructure for a forward-looking transit system.
